How to have an Out of this World Party

First you need to start with a pretty amazing invitation. You need to get your guest list excited about your party by letting them know your theme and the fun you have planned.
Invitations
When we created our invitations we used lots of clipart of astronauts and rocketships printed onto white paper. You could also print out the details on white paper and then attach that to colored paper cut in the shape of a rocketship or comet or something similar. Invitees were told they were selected as part of a special crew for a mission to the planet of Auer (our last name). Inside the invitation, they learned their objective was to help the birthday child, Lieutenant Nicholas have a Happy 5th Birthday. They were to report to duty at the date of the party. With the countdown beginning at the party start time. Their return to Earth was the party ending time. The Launch Site and coordinates were listed as the party location. Lastly, guests were told to communicate with the commanders (parents) at Mission Control to confirm their flight readiness (ability to come to the party).
Decorations
Decorations can be done very inexpensively. Convert recycled containers into rocketships with paints and construction paper and hang them from the ceiling in various locations. (For more ideas about how to do that email fairytaleentertainment@comcast.net) Cardboard can be cut into stars, comets, and moons. Then cover with aluminum foil for a shimmery effect before hanging. A large orange posterboard can be shaped and hung from a wall to create the illusion of the sun. Planets can be created from Styrofoam balls or anything sphere-shape. We also placed stars covered with glitter everywhere.
The Cake
I can’t take credit for the cake idea I used. I found it in the book Perfect Kids’ Parties. If you bake a 13×9 cake and cut a curve edge of the left and right side, you can then place those cut pieces at the bottom of the cake to give the appearance of a rocketship. Then frost and decorate as you please. When you are ready to serve, place cool whip at the base of your rocket. Then streak streams of red and yellow food coloring through it. This will give the appearance of fire shooting out of your rocketship.
The Party Itself
Since our guests were essentially Astronauts in Training for a mission, the party became a series of tests, challenges, and activities to prepare them for being an astronaut. First they created rocketships with paper, crayons, stickers, and glue. Then, they collected moon rocks, which they got to paint. Before moving on they needed to refuel so each astronaut made a moon pizza (basically a pizza bagel, they added the cheese, sauce, and any toppings.) Then, they practiced launching rocketships and testing if they would land safely and they practiced catching comets. For our launching rocket simulation we used a sports ball as a rocket and the children threw it into a baby pool of water. If no splash was created the rocket had landed safely. The catching comet game involves children playing tag. A few children have comets (tennis balls) attached to them. The tennis ball has many ribbons on it. When you say start the children begin playing, trying to collect the comet streams from the comets. The child that has collected the most ribbons has caught the most comets. Finally, the astronauts visited a healthy snack bar and assembled snack packs for their return trip to earth.
One of the best things about this party is that the kids were creating and collecting things along the way. There was no need for a goodie bag. No need to buy candy that isn’t good for them. No need to buy cheap toys that break too soon. Each child was given a bag that they filled with their rocketship, moon rocks, and snack bag, more than enough stuff to send a child home with after a party. The only thing that didn’t fit in the bag were the memories, much too big, and certainly meant to last long after their completed mission.
